In 1837 a retired soldier named Joseph Moore purchased the site that became Weston from an Indian trader for a barrel whiskey. The photo above was taken just before a major fire destroyed several of the buildings pictured. W.F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody resided for a time in Weston. After Cody's father, Isaac, was attacked and stabbed while giving an antislavery speech in Kansas, Bill came to live with his uncle, Elijah Cody, in his home at 600 Main Street.

The State Historical Society of Missouri has a large collection of photographs of scenes of early Missouri. The images in this collection were taken from that collection and depict the main streets of a sample of Missouri cities.

County and city histories from the Society's collection were used in preparation of this exhibit. To purchase a copy of any of the photographs in this collection or for further information please refer to the Society's policies regarding photo usage and reproduction.
