The Buck Clayton Collection is in the Special Collections Department http://www.umkc.edu/lib/spec-col/index.html of Miller Nichols Library http://www.umkc.edu/lib/index.html at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. There are over 1500 photographs in the collection documenting Clayton's life and musical career from 1929-1991.

A seminal figure in the evolution of jazz, Buck Clayton (1911-1991) distinguished himself as an arranger, composer, trumpeter and band leader. He began his career in 1929 playing in California. After several years performing with Earl Dancers' band, Clayton moved to Shanghai in 1934 with a band of his own. Upon his return to the United States in 1936, he joined the Count Basie Orchestra as a leading soloist and arranger. During this pivotal time Clayton recorded with famous New York Jazz singer, Billie Holiday. He remained with the Basie Orchestra until he was drafted in 1943. In the post World War II period, Clayton led his own sextet in performances both nationally and internationally. He also appeared in the 1955 film, The Benny Goodman Story.

In addition to portraits of Clayton and other musicians, the photos document musical performances, tours and venues, and Clayton's experience as a music educator. Included are family photos as well as images from his travels and social life. There are also sound recordings in this collection that are housed in the Marr Sound Archives on the ground floor of the Miller Nichols Library.
